Bolloré Bluecar. Electric, so the lever goes forward to go forward, stays in the middle for not going at all and goes back for going astern. Simple

Daf 55 Variomatic. Forward to go forward, back to go back, switch on the dash for more revs.

Bigger Daf. Turn knob to choose direction, select tortoises for low speed manoeuvring. Twelve gears but they look after themselves.

Citroen Cactus. Couldn't be simpler, just push button of your choice.

Mack Twin Stick. Use one hand for one lever, use a second hand through the wheel for the other one (and break your arm if you hit a large bump), use third hand to steer.

The one on the left works a four speed non synchro box. The one on the right works a five speed non synchro box. Yes, really, twenty gears in total of which two can't be used so 18 usable.

You'll notice they all have a lever nearby labelled "Park".

Yes, hence you multiply four by five. You engaged first first (!) and then you had four choices using the auxiliary box so 1 lo lo, 1 lo split, 1 hi split, 1 direct and so on. In practice you didn't use all the combinations.

I think the last style is the kind I got to try once.

(looks again) oh, the slidey one? I suppose that had to be mechanical.

This was before fly-by-wire. Those buttons were hooked up to the transmissions by linkages and cables and the like, they physically changed the gears instead of just telling the transmission to change like in a modern car. I think the parking pawl might have needed more force to engage so they went with a lever instead of a button.
